Ascorbyl palmitate

Ascorbyl palmitate is an ester formed from ascorbic acid and palmitic acid creating a fat-soluble form of vitamin C. In addition to its use as a source of vitamin C, it is also used as an antioxidant food additive (E number E304). It is approved for use as a food additive in the EU, the USA, Australia, and New Zealand.

Ascorbyl palmitate is known to be broken down (through the digestive process) into ascorbic acid and palmitic acid (a saturated fatty acid) before being absorbed into the bloodstream.

Ascorbyl palmitate is also marketed as "vitamin C ester".

Ascorbic palmitate is esterified from palmitic acid and L-ascorbic acid and other natural ingredients. Its chemical formula is C22H38O7, which is a highly efficient oxygen scavger and synergist. It has been evaluated by the Food Additives Committee of the World Health Organization (WHO) as a nutritive, non-toxic, efficient and safe food additive. It is the only antioxidant that can be used in infant food in China. It can play the role of antioxidant, food (oil) color protection and nutrition enhancement when used in food.

Ascorbate palmitate is a kind of high efficiency, safe and non-toxic fat soluble nutritional antioxidant, which is difficult to dissolve in water and vegetable oil. White or yellowish-white powder with a slight citrus aroma.

L Ascorbic acid palmitic acid (referred to as VC ester) has efficient oxygen removal and nutritional strengthening functions, with all the physiological activities of vitamin C, while overcoming the three shortcomings of vitamin C, such as heat, light and tide. At present, L ascorbate palmitate production process mainly includes acyl chloride method, sulfuric acid method and lipase method. Acyl chloride method is highly corrosive: sulfuric acid method has a long reaction time and a large amount of waste acid generation, serious pollution: lipase method is not mature.
